The 20th Rovereto International Mozart Festival
TOMORROW, 6th October, at the Teatro Sociale in Trento, a major symphony concert

Saturday evening’s event at the Teatro Sociale in Trento (9 p.m.) has been organized by the Mozart Festival with a dual purpose: to offer the public a symphony concert which would include in a single evening both music of the past and some contemporary works, and to confirm the close ties between Rovereto and the provincial capital by involving it actively in a cultural initiative in which the entire territory is taking part.

Conducted by Massimo Mazza, the "Arturo Toscanini" Philharmonic Orchestra – a famous orchestra comprising over one hundred musicians – will perform music from different periods.

The concert will start with the winning pieces from the Bologna "2nd August" International Composition Competition, which is dedicated to the memory of the victims of the 1980 terrorist bomb attack, and is currently one of the competitions best known internationally for producing new work.

"The winning score, Long old road by Andrea Nosari", explains musicologist Danilo Faravelli, "has structural features that are reminiscent of the traditional concerto form, despite the fact that the basic melodic material is inspired by the themes of the blues tradition as used by Jimi Hendrix (1942-1970) in his song My friend".
The runner-up is Aire de tango, by the Argentine composer Adriana Isabel Figueroa Mañas. "Its sub-title fantasia per violoncello e orchestra sinfonica", written in the score by the composer", Faravelli goes on, "announces right from the start her decision to exclude the electric bass from the role of concert partner of the austere stringed instrument. The listener, however, cannot fail to notice how this function is frequently transferred during the course of the piece to a piano, an instrument which has always been disinclined to accept a subordinate role as a mere part of the orchestra".
The winner of the third prize, Il rito dell’inverno (The rite of winter) by the Florentine composer Simone Santini, is also scored for a single instrument, in this case the ‘cello.
The winner of the special Mozart Prize, established for the first time this year jointly by the "2nd August" Competition and the Rovereto Festival, is Electric Dies Irae, a work by the Genoese composer Stefano Guarnieri in which the leading position of the ‘cello, used mainly in the middle to low registers, is shared equally with the electric bass.

The second half of the concert is devoted to the "Great Inspirer", with a performance of one of his best-loved works, the Symphony no. 40 in G minor KV 550. Quite simply, "an absolute masterpiece".
