The 20th edition of the Rovereto International Mozart Festival opens today with a double event. At 4 p.m., at the Caritro Foundation in Rovereto, there will be a conference
on "The figure of Don Giovanni. Art, cinema and psychoanalysis",
where some outstanding speakers will be investigating a character who
has been a part of Western culture for hundreds of years. Quirino Principe
(musicologist, German scholar and dramatist, as well as being in charge
of the Italian edition of J.R.R.Tolkien’s Lord of the Rings) will
discuss the evolution of the Don Giovanni legend over the centuries.
Francesco Casetti, lecturer in Film Studies at the Università
Cattolica in Milan, will examine the character in the context of the
history of the cinema. Anna Ferruta, a psychoanalyst who is an expert
in the study of the interface between psychoanalysis and its cultural
and social background, will discuss how art can represent the opposite
extremes of human nature. Also present at the conference will be Margherita Cogo, the provincial councillor for culture. A 9 p.m. in the Rovereto Philharmonic Hall, the National Puppet Theatre
of Prague will give a performance of Mozart’s Don Giovanni, in
a production which has already been enjoyed by over 400,000 spectators
throughout Europe. It is the continuation of a tradition – that
of puppet theatre – which was born in the eighteenth century and
is still considered today in its country of origin on the same level
as opera and ballet. Ticket prices: full price 16 €, reduced price 12 €, students 5 €.
